A Topping Out ceremony is taking place at Ercall Wood Technology College today to celebrate the completion of the roof on the new school building.
Ercall Wood Technology College will be the third brand new secondary school in the borough when it opens for the new academic year in September (2014).
Telford & Wrekin Council’s £200m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project is rebuilding and refurbishing all secondary schools across the borough. Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley and Phoenix Academy in Dawley have already opened with brand new education and community facilities.
When complete, the new facility at Ercall Wood will comprise of a new school building with associated car parking, landscaping, sports facilities, as well as new high quality sports pitches which will also be available for community use.
Councillor Paul Watling, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: “The building work at Ercall Wood is coming on apace now and this ceremony will mark the start of the final phase of building work on the site.
“The new college will provide an exciting new learning space for pupils at the school when it opens later this year.
“The BSF project is building momentum now with work beginning on other sites during Spring.”
Phil Greer, Managing Director for Shepherd Construction, said, “This topping out ceremony is a key milestone for the Shepherd and Telford and Wrekin Partnership where together we are creating the learning environment for 900 pupils’ future education.
“Ercall Wood Technology College, being the first of eight such establishments, will also provide tremendous benefits for the local community.
“We are pleased with the project’s development and are on target for completion of the first stage by July 2014.”
Headteacher, Chay Davis, said: “I cannot tell you how excited we all are. Our anticipation is rising.
“You find yourself imagining what it will be like when it finally arrives. I can’t wait to see the faces of our pupils and staff when they step foot into the completed building in just 6 months time!”
