Scheme will re-establish Telford water course
Work is due to start next week on a scheme to re-establish a section of Telford waterway after a successful application for European funding.
Shropshire Wildlife Trust – in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council – aims to create approximately 100 metres of new watercourse in an area of open space to the south of Stirchley Pools.
The Mad Brook Watercourse Project will also re-establish a section of the same watercourse downstream of Brookside Avenue.
It will also include the creation of rock ramps at the exiting weirs between Stirchley Pools to increase the ecological connectivity between the features.
The section of the Mad Brook in question was previously piped during the creation of Telford in the 1960s.
The new scheme has been funded by the European Water Framework Directive following an application to the Environment Agencies Catchment Restoration Fund by the Wildlife Trust and the Council.
Work on the rock ramps begins on March 31 with the main works on the water course beginning the following week. Some footpaths in the area will have to be closed during the works but disruption will be kept to a minimum.
Councillor Charles Smith, cabinet member for Development, said: “The aim for this project is to improve both water quality and biodiversity in the Mad Brook and that creating a new water course in an urban setting will enhance the amenity value of the area.”
