A man has died and another has suffered critical injuries after being involved in a collision on the A53 whilst being followed by police.

Man dies in collision after police chase along A53

The car being followed by a marked West Mercia Police vehicle, collided with another on the A53 at Baldwin’s Gate, to the west of Newcastle Under Lyme at about 9.50pm last night.

Posting on twitter Market Drayton Police say the burgundy 'P' reg Vauxhall Corsa being followed was involved in crime in Cheshire, Woore and Norton in Hales.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission was notified of the incident just after midnight and sent investigators to the scene and obtain accounts from the officers involved. The commision has also met with the family of the man who died, to explain its involvement and offer support. Anyone with information which may assist the investigation, should call 0800 096 9070 or email witness@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival crews found two cars that had suffered considerable damage.

“There were three men in one car and a single man in the other car.

“Sadly, one man from the first car was confirmed dead at the scene. A second had suffered multiple injuries and was anaesthetised at the scene before being taken to the major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital. He was in a critical condition on arrival. The third man had facial injuries. They were taken to the same hospital.

“The man in the second car had a minor knee injury. He was also taken to Royal Stoke but was released after further treatment.”
