A controlled explosion has been carried out in Pontesbury this evening after munitions were discovered at a building site.

A controlled explosion was carried out in Pontesbury last night after munitions were discovered at a building site.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Mercia Police were called to the village at just after 4pm on Thursday.
The Second World War munitions were discovered by workers carrying out groundworks at a building site off Minsterley Road.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts were called and carried out a controlled explosion.
The A488 through Pontesbury was closed to traffic and a number of properties evacuated when a 100m cordon was put in place. Local residents in the village were also advised to keep their windows and doors shut.
The cordon has now been lifted and residents have returned to their homes.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "People may see a continued police presence overnight as we ensure the area remains safe. However, there is no further threat to the public and people are now able to return to their homes and roads have reopened."
