Telford & Wrekin Council launches single-person council tax amnesty

Residents across Telford and Wrekin are being urged to check and update their council tax records during a new Council Tax Amnesty, running from Monday 8 December to Sunday 21 December 2025.

The amnesty offers a two-week window for people who currently claim the Single Person Discount on their council tax to notify the Council of any changes to their household circumstances.

Each year, Telford & Wrekin Council reviews claims for the 25% Council Tax discount to ensure they remain valid. Circumstances that may affect eligibility include:

- A partner, tenant, lodger or other adult moving in

- An adult child returning home or finishing full-time education

- Any other change that means the claimant is no longer the sole adult in the property

Councillor Zona Hannington, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Governance and Customer Services, said: “We know that most people claiming Single Person Discount are doing so correctly. But if your circumstances have changed, this amnesty gives you the chance to update your details.

"By acting now, you can avoid being caught out in the future and potentially facing fines or prosecution. We want to make it easy for residents to do the right thing and ensure our council tax system remains fair for everyone.”

Residents who update their details during the amnesty will be required to repay any backdated council tax but will not face additional fines or potential prosecution.

To update your records, visit telford.gov.uk/mycounciltax , email council.tax@telford.gov.uk with the subject line “SPD Amnesty”, or call 01952 383838 to speak to an advisor.
